Chairman 2006-2009, West Midlands Barbershop Harmony Club
It was on a German markets cruise on the river Rhine that I met George Badland and his wife, Gwen. We were seated at the same table for breakfast and dinner. When Gwen found out I had an interest in music she said to me “Don’t let George hear that, or he’ll have you singing with his Barbershop Chorus.” “What?” I asked. “Me? Sing barbershop? You must be joking. Straw boaters and jackets made from deckchairs? I don’t think so!” Well, to cut the story short George persuaded me to go along with him to a Tuesday rehearsal.
I arrived full of apprehension and trepidation, but was immediately put at ease with the friendliness of everyone. After a voice test to determine which part would suit me best I was invited onto the risers and placed within the Bass section. It did not take me long to find out that the world of Barbershop was nothing like I had imagined. There were no ‘deckchair jackets’ and no straw boaters. Instead there was an ambience of friendship and camaraderie. Everyone was very supportive and full of encouragement. Afterwards we went to a local pub where I was introduced to “The Afterglow”, a couple of beers and a general chat where I got to know many more new friends and learn more about what barbershopping was all about. If you are already a barbershopper, then you know what I am talking about so if you have moved into the area - or are just passing through - then come and join us for an evening.
If you are not a barbershopper but like to sing a bit (even if it’s only in the bath or down the local after a few beers!) then come along to Grove Vale School, Perry Barr any Tuesday evening. We start rehearsal at 7:30 p.m. You will be made welcome and will have the opportunity to experience first hand the wonderful world of Barbershop. Should you want more information then please telephone or e-mail any of the people listed on the Contact Us page. There is also a map there showing the location of Grove Vale School.
So come along and enjoy yourself - you won’t regret it.
Yours In Harmony,
John Eardley
Chairman
