Chairman 2000-2002, West Midlands Barbershop Harmony Club

Welcome to the wonderful world of Barbershop Harmony as enjoyed by people everywhere, east, west, north and south.

The West Midlands Barbershop Harmony Club, founded in 1977 by a group of teachers from West Bromwich, is part of a larger organisation, the British Association of Barbershop Singers (BABS) which in turn is affiliated to the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America Inc. (SPEBSQSA) along with societies from Holland, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and even Russia. You will read that the Club sings under the name of Anvil Chorus and draws members from the West Midlands area. The current age range is 9 years to 79 years.

Barbershop can really be a family pastime; many of our members have partners who are in the Birmingham Ladies Barbershop Harmony Club, Second City Sound. Social standing in life is unimportant; we don’t care whether you are a chief executive, a road sweeper, a priest, retired or unemployed; the only shared attribute is the love of barbershop harmony. Previous experience is not essential since we have a number of members whose job it is to teach the skills in singing close harmony in the barbershop style.

If you walk through the door to our rehearsal room you will realise that you suddenly have a great number of friends, these are friends for life and at the Annual Convention, you will have the opportunity to meet barbershoppers from across the country and also make friends worldwide.

Having read this far you have taken your first step into this music making hobby. If you want more information telephone one of the people on the Find Us page or alternatively visit Grove Vale School, Monksfield Avenue, Great Barr on a Tuesday evening. You will be made very welcome - just turn up. Should you require assistance in getting there please telephone and we can help.

Yours in Harmony

Phil Mobsby
